Jewitch: Seeking the Divine

WeblogPoMoAMA Day 3

What runs through your head when you can’t fall asleep? -Annie

I often find myself wandering back through memories, tracing as far back as I can remember and moving forward. Most of the time, my mind drifts to the years before my stepdad passed. That time was the highlight of my life. Even though it ended in a painful way and wasn’t free of challenges, those years stand out as my happiest.

Then there are other times when I'm focused on an event I'm looking forward to—like when I was about to go to Houston to see The Chicks (formerly the Dixie Chicks) and Stevie Nicks in the same weekend. For the whole week leading up to the trip, I could think of little else. I’d find myself obsessively checking and rechecking the hotel reservations and the tickets, making sure every detail was set for a smooth experience.

It’s as if my brain has only two sleep modes: either reliving old memories or pre-living upcoming plans. Well, there is a secret third mode—when I hear an amazing song that just won’t leave my head. Songs like The Witches Road from Agatha All Along play on repeat in my mind until I finally give in and let them play as I fall asleep. It’s infuriating… but in the best way.
